The Excelsior Scholarship program allows eligible students to earn a free college degree at any City University of New York (CUNY) or State University of New York (SUNY) college.

To be eligible, you must be a NY State resident, earn $125,000 or less, attend school full time, and be pursuing an associate's or bachelor's degree. Additional eligibility requirements apply. Both new and current CUNY and SUNY students are eligible for the scholarship.

CUNY offers a number of programs for high school seniors, current and prospective college students, and adult learners.

Accelerated Study in Associate Programs (ASAP)

ASAP is a fast-track, cost-free degree program that helps qualified low-income graduating high school seniors and working adults earn an associate degree quickly. It offers financial aid, block scheduling to accommodate work schedules, academic support, free textbooks and help finding employment during school and after graduation.

CUNY EDGE

CUNY EDGE provides students with a range of services, benefits, and supports so that they succeed in college and in their careers. The program helps CUNY students who are receiving public assistance achieve academic excellence, graduate on time, and find employment.

CUNY Prep

The CUNY Prep program helps 16 to 18 year olds return to high school to get a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma (GED) and go on to college. To be eligible, students must have been out of school for at least 2 months.

CUNY Start

The CUNY Start program enrolls prospective CUNY students who have been accepted to college because they have a high school or high school equivalency diploma (GED) but are not ready for college-level work based on their scores on the CUNY Assessment Tests.

Green Energy Training

You can take training courses to learn how to make buildings more energy efficient and prepare for a career in green energy through the CUNY Center for Sustainable Energy's Green Energy Training Program (GET).

Search for Education, Elevation, and Knowledge (SEEK)

SEEK provides concentrated and specialized counseling, remedial instruction, tutorial services, and a financial aid payment for book expenses.

Vaccine Mandate

All CUNY students registering for a fully in-person or hybrid class for the 2022 Spring Term must be fully vaccinated to attend in-person classes, unless they have been granted a religious exception or medical exemption.

Students had until January 14, 2022 to upload proof of vaccination into CUNYfirst. To meet the upload deadline, students must have received the vaccines by these dates:

• Moderna: first dose by December 17, 2021
• Pfizer: first dose by December 24, 2021
• Johnson & Johnson: single dose by January 14, 2022

Requests for religious exceptions or medical exemptions must be submitted via the CUNYfirst Vaccine Verification Form.

As of January 15, 2022, all CUNY students will be required to get a COVID-19 booster once they are eligible for one.

Mask Mandate

As of Monday, March 7, 2022, masks are optional for all CUNY students, faculty, staff and visitors. Anyone who chooses to wear a mask may continue to do so. Masks will continue to be available on campus and offices for people who want them. 

Faculty, staff and students who are still not vaccinated, or those who have been or will be granted a medical exemption or religious exception, are urged to wear a mask. Additional mask rules may apply for anyone exposed to COVID-19.
