New York City doesn't allow overnight parking of commercial vehicles on residential streets between 9 PM and 5 AM. If you own a commercial vehicle other than a tractor-trailer, you may receive a $65 ticket for overnight parking in a residential area.

For a tractor-trailer owner, the initial fine for this parking violation is $265, but any additional tickets issued to the same owner within a six-month period are $515 each.

Tractor, Trailer and Truck Definitions

For purposes of tractor-trailer parking enforcement, the Vehicle and Traffic Law of the State of New York (VTL) has the following definitions.

• Tractor - A motor vehicle designed and used as the power unit in combination with a semitrailer or trailer, or two such trailers in tandem.
• Trailer - Any vehicle not propelled by its own power and is drawn on the public highways by a motor vehicle as defined by the V TL (except motorcycle side cars), vehicles being towed by a non-rigid support and vehicles designed and primarily used for other purposes and only occasionally drawn by such a motor vehicle.
• Truck - Every motor vehicle designed, used, or maintained primarily for the transportation of property.
