The State mandate requiring face coverings or masks to be worn in businesses and apartment buildings ended on February 10, 2022. Complaints are no longer accepted.

The State still requires face coverings for everyone when in:

  • Public transit
  • Health care settings
  • Schools and childcare centers
  • Congregate settings, such as nursing homes and homeless shelters
  • Correctional facilities

Businesses and other private establishments are allowed to require masks for employees and customers.

To report face covering violations on the subway or buses, contact the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) online.

The City only accepts reports about lack of social distancing at City offices or buildings. The City does not accept reports about lack of social distancing at any other type of location.
